Delhi Capitals (DC) batter Tristan Stubbs was confident that, with David Miller at the other end, the team would be able to score 15 off the final over to complete the run chase and beat Royal Challengers (RCB).
Miller struck two consecutive sixes and a four after Romario Shepherd had conceded just two runs from his first two deliveries. The left-hander could not take his side over the line against Gujarat Titans (GT), but made no mistake against the defending champions. Stubbs, who watched his countryman finish the game with one ball to spare, was certain the job would be done.
“I said to him (Miller), ‘I knew we were going to do it. I didn’t know how, but thankfully David Miller was at the other end. That’s his bread and butter.’”
While Stubbs anchored the run chase, it was KL Rahul’s half-century on his birthday that laid the foundation and eased the pressure on the South African after the loss of three quick wickets in the Powerplay. Stubbs praised the stand-in captain’s effort and explained his role in the 69-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
“KL ended up getting most of the strike and giving us real momentum,” said Stubbs. “Through the middle overs, the way he batted was magnificent. He really kept us going. We spoke beforehand as a team about batting in partnerships, so I felt he was going well and I just needed to give him the strike.”
In the previous game, Stubbs’s fifty was not enough to secure a win, but against RCB, his unbeaten 60 came in a victorious effort.
