A clinical all-round show propelled Gujarat Titans to a resounding four-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Narendra Modi Stadium. GT hunted down the modest target in the 16th over. GT have five wins in nine games, with RCB winning six in as many matches.
The bowlers lay the platform
Kagiso Rabada, Arshad Khan, Mohammed Siraj, Jason Holder and Rashid Khan shared the wickets for the home side. Rabada and Arshad took the key scalps of Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar. Meanwhile, Rashid took the prized scalps of Tim David and Devdutt Padikkal. Rashid flummoxing Devdutt with the leg-break was the highlight of his spell. In other words, the left-handed batter was expecting Rashid to bowl his trademark googly.
Arshad ended up with three wickets, while Rashid returned with impressive figures of 2 for 19 from four overs.
The Kohli vs Rabada battle
The GT-RCB contest would be fondly recalled for the rip-roaring battle between Kohli and Rabada. Kohli smacked Rabada for five boundaries, which included the on-the-rise loft over mid-off. The kind of shot that tells Kohli is still a pretty good player of fast bowling.
Rabada, however, had the last laugh. In his very next over, Rabada dislodged Kohli with a short ball.
Was it out or not out?
There was also a bit of drama during the first innings. In the 8th over, Arshad dismissed Rajat Patidar, with Holder pouching the catch in the deep. However, there were question marks over whether the fielder had taken it cleanly. The third umpire adjudged that Holder had his fingers wrapped around the ball.
The superlative all-round show
Holder also deserves a special mention as he didn’t just take two wickets but also grabbed three catches. Moreover, when GT lost a couple of quick wickets, Holder steered them to win.
The Bhuvneshwar Kumar masterclass
Even during GT’s innings, the ball nipped around a bit off the seam. Bhuvneshwar, the current Purple Cap holder, put on a very good exhibition of seam and swing bowling to take three wickets. Although his noteworthy effort went in vain. The cornerstone of his spell was the wicket of Sai Sudharshan as the ball didn’t just move off the seam but also seemed to kick a tad extra to take the edge.
Meanwhile, the wicket of Shubman Gill would also be remembered for Virat Kohli’s celebration.
Gill-Buttler show
GT also would be pleased with the cameos from Jos Buttler (39 off 19) and Gill (43 off 18). Gill collected three fours and a six in a single over from Hazlewood. On the other hand, Buttler landed some eye-catching lofts. Gill’s innings also indicated that he could play with more freedom.
