Understanding belief or lack of it is akin to landing up in the world of the unknown. Sanju Samson’s transformation in a matter of a few months acts as a microcosm for it. At the start of the year, before the final ODI between India and New Zealand in Trivandrum, the wicketkeeper-batter was at the centre of attraction. After all, he was the hometown boy.
As Samson went about practising his skills before the game, hundreds of reporters looked to zoom their lenses on him. For a player who was out of form, Samson was hitting the ball well too. Watching from a distance, yours truly thought – Perhaps, tomorrow, Samson might just return to form. That tomorrow, though, had a different reality to narrative – A tentative batter who was bereft of belief.
However, at the start of May 2026, the same batter appears to be at the peak of his prowess. For the first time in his IPL career, he looks all but set to end the season with an average of 50. A couple of months ago, he also took home the player of the tournament award in a World Cup. It was a World Cup where Samson seemed set to warm the benches. As the quirk of fate would have it, Rinku Singh had to leave the Indian set-up due to a personal tragedy.
Samson then went on to compile scores of 97, 89, 89 to chart one of the finest comebacks in modern-day cricketing landscape. So how did Samson regain his mojo? Perhaps it was the sweep off West Indies’ Akeal Hosein or the follow up pull while facing the same bowler that acted as the booster tonic. Whatever may be the case, we are again visualising an imaginary landscape.
Remember, batting can be a lonely game. A game-breaking hundred would be showered with praises. However, one small mistake and you could be trudging back to the pavilion with a forlorn look.
Samson has aced those mental battles. The wicketkeeper-batter also seems to understand when to go up or down a gear. We could see a glimpse of it in the game against Delhi Capitals where he gauged the rather slow nature of the surface before putting up an explosion of fireworks. At one point of time, Samson was on 22 off 21 but he finished up with 87 off just 52 deliveries. Such has been his recent form that there are whispers of Samson returning to the ODI set-up.
Amidst Samson’s metamorphosis, for mere mortals like us it is back to comprehending a mysterious world where uncertainty gives way to conviction and assurance in a matter of one World Cup innings. Or it might have come down to one particular shot.
