Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) pacer Mohammed Shami highlighted the importance of fielding after delivering a match-winning spell against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
Shami was at his best against his former team, finishing with figures of 2 for 9 in his four overs. During his spell, he removed SRH’s dangerous opening batters, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, cheaply to lay the foundation for LSG’s five-wicket win.
“I’m happy. We lost our last game, so winning this one was key to building momentum,” Shami said after the match. “If you want to play, it’s important to stay in touch with the game. Only if you’re fit can you work on your skills. That’s why I stayed in touch with the game and played all the domestic matches.”
Last year, Shami was with SRH, and he couldn’t deliver before picking up an injury. Since then, the veteran pacer hasn’t represented India but has been regularly playing domestic cricket for Bengal. Shami also took a cue from the opposition bowlers in using slower deliveries.
“Without skill or experience, nothing happens. But you have to adapt. I was here last year and used a lot of slower ones. The opposition use them a lot, so I thought, why not us too?” said Shami.
Apart from Shami, Prince Yadav and Avesh Khan also picked up a couple of wickets each to restrict SRH to 156. Captain Rishabh Pant led the run chase with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 68 to seal the win in a last-over thriller.
