Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Ayush Mhatre has recounted his conversation with MS Dhoni, which helped him in his decision-making as captain of the India Under-19 team.
Mhatre was signed as a replacement player by CSK last year. After incumbent captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was injured, Dhoni led the team in his absence. As a newcomer set to lead India U-19 in the Asia Cup and World Cup, Mhatre took valuable lessons from the only captain to have won all ICC titles.
Recalling the conversation, Mhatre said Dhoni advised the young captain to keep his emotions in check, as staying calm would help him make better decisions on the field.
“I spoke to him about captaincy after the IPL, as it was my first time leading,” the 18-year-old said in a video shared by the Indian Premier League on 14 April. “He advised me to stay calm on the ground and never take decisions when angry. There will be frustrating moments, especially during opposition partnerships, but if you stay calm and let that phase pass, you can make better decisions.”
The time spent at CSK with Dhoni helped Mhatre as India U-19 dominated Australia U-19 Down Under. Thereafter, India U-19 remained unbeaten until the final, where they lost to Pakistan U-19 in Dubai. That remained a one-off defeat, as India did not lose any matches after that and went on to lift the World Cup trophy.
Mhatre and Dhoni are back together for CSK in the ongoing IPL 2026. The former has been impressive with the bat and is currently the second-highest run-scorer for his team, with 171 runs in five innings. Meanwhile, Dhoni has missed five matches so far due to a calf strain.
