Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has requested fans to avoid comparing India’s three T20 World Cup–winning teams. His remarks came after the Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian team defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in the T20 World Cup final to lift the trophy in Ahmedabad on 8 March.
“Let us not compare eras. Every era has different players and a different vibe, so why mix everything together? What this team has achieved is phenomenal,” Harbhajan told India Today. “They have set new limits in terms of how this format can be played and how it should be played. When we started in 2007, we had no real clue about this format.”
With the win at the Narendra Modi Stadium, India became the first team to win back-to-back titles. The 2024 win featured veterans such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, while the 2026 campaign included more younger players. India have also become the only team to win the title three times — in 2007, 2024 and 2026. MS Dhoni led the team to their first World Cup win, and Harbhajan was part of that squad.
Harbhajan also spoke about how T20 cricket has changed over the years, saying: “In our day, 140, 150 or 160 was considered a winning total. If you scored that many runs, you felt confident you could defend it. But now even 180 or 200 can be chased down. That shows how much the game has changed. This team has taken the game to a completely different level.”
In the one-sided match, India posted a massive total of 255/5 on the back of Sanju Samson’s 89-run knock. In reply, New Zealand were bowled out for just 159 in 19 overs.
